More about the provenance Oushak | Turkey
Oushak is located in Western Anatolia (Turkey). It has an old and famous carpet tradition. Oushak belongs to the pioneer cities of the Oriental rug. There are pieces from the 16th century in Turkish museums on display. In the 17th century Oushaks have been made in high quantities for the Christian churches, and court dynasties of Europe. great artists of that time immortalized Oushak rugs in their paintings and by this contributed to the history of the hand made Oriental rug. Some Oushak designs which had the yellow Arabasque design on red ground were named after painters like Hans Holbein and Lorenzo Lotto. Oushak is a provenance of unique history and significance.
This Oriental rug has been treated with an "Antique Finish" wash. This wash includes not only the actual cleaning of the carpet but also its processing (ennobling) which represents an increase in the carpet's value. Carpet lovers often appreciate the "patina", the antique look which is reached by ageing, usage, and light exposure. Therefore this wash has been developed which actually accelerates this procedure and turns the colors of a rug, which often still feel and look "raw" after the carpet production, into softer and older looking colors. By this special technique a soft and silky feel is added to the Oriental carpet as well. This washing technique requires experience and skill since otherwise carpets could easily be damaged by it. In this case the washing was implemented perfectly.
This Oriental rug has a so called "open design". Any rug in which the medallion is surrounded by a large area of a plain one-colored field and if at all have corner patterns within the field. The open design is currently experiencing a come back and became very popular.
