More about the provenance Zanjan | Iran
Zanjan is a district in West Persia surrounded by significant carpet production centers: in the North there is Hamadan, in the East there is Bijar and in the West Ghazwin. The many influences are probably the reason why there are many variations in Zanjan designs. Zanjan rugs are mainly made by the peasant women of the Kolyai tribes.
This Oriental rug has been treated with a "Noble Finish" wash. This wash includes not only the actual cleaning of the carpet but also its processing (ennobling) which represents an increase in the Oriental carpet's value. By this special technique a soft and silky feel and shine are added to the carpet. This washing technique requires experience and skill since otherwise carpets could easily be damaged by it. In this case the washing was implemented perfectly.
This Zanjan has a "Herati" or "Mahi" design (has its origin in Herat, ca. 16th century, short for "Mahi to Hos" meaning "fish in the pond"). A rosette is surrounded by a rhombus which is again surrounded by four bent leaves. The name "Mahi" meaning "fish" was given to this design because the leaves resemble swimming fish.
