This rug is one of a known group of Chinese rugs woven in the second half of the 18th century which derive from earlier scrolling peony and lotus rugs. The two colored lotuses and vinery of this rug are particularly nicely drawn and are rhythmic in their placement. The rug is particularly graceful. The repeating lotus field is enclosed by a peony and vinery border and a nicely drawn wan meander border. Condition of the carpet: Restoration including securing the foundation and significant repiling. This rug is very floppy and delicate. References: similar rugs of the same period are in the Victoria & Albert Museum and other museums |
