Lilian is located in West Iran 80 km South-East of Arak. It is mainly inhabited by Armenians. Lilian rugs are in general thoroughly and precisely made relatively heavy Oriental rugs. The wool of these rugs is rather shiny and soft, the designs are mostly generous large floral palmets. The Persian knot is used as opposed to the more common Turkish know. Geographically Lilian rugs are considered to be from the Mahal/Arak region.
In Europe the term for this kind of Lilian, ca. 1920 is "American Lilian, ca. 1920". Of course "American" rugs are not made in America, they are re-imports from America to Europe. In the beginning of the 20th century up to the 1930s, certain rugs were made specifically for the American market and taste which had of course common characteristic designs and colors. These were apparently also much appreciated by Europeans which can be seen by their high popularity to this day.
