More about the provenance Mashad Sherkate Farsh, ca. 1930 | Iran
Mashad is located in North East Persia in the province of Khorassan, the antique name of this city is Sanabad. Mashad is a desired place of pilgrimage, especially for those who cannot afford to go to Mekka. Whoever made it to Mekka is entitled to be called "Haji" wheras people who made the Mashad pilgrimage are entitled to be called "Mashadi". Nadir Shah made Mashad the capital in 1736. The Mashad rug belongs to the main provenances of Iran's rug industry. The typical characteristics of Mashad rugs are the precise, delicate and fine compositions of the designs and the typical Mashad-red which can be described as a deep dark red with a slight tendency towards purple. Esteemed carpet manufactories were founded in Iran - like of the late great master Makhmal(baf). The tradition of those famous manufactories has been taken on by countless little manufactories now active in Mashad. The typical wool of Mashad rugs has a certain shine and is rather soft, the pile is higher than average.
"Sherkat" is the shorter term for "Sherkate Sahamie Farshe Iran", which means "Stock Corporation of Persian Carpets". This corporation is half state owned and has been founded in order to secure a constant rug production of higher quality. Sherkate Farsh maintains numerous manufactories in Iran and primarily controls the quality of the wool, the thoroughness of production (e.g. avoiding crooked rugs) and the purity of the designs, i.e. keeping certain traditions of design up whereby Nomadic designs are almost not used at all. Often it is easily recognizable whether a certain rug is a Sherkat production or not. But it is much more difficult to determine where in Iran a Sherkat rug has been made since the manufactory is not bound to the traditions of the region. However, this rug has been made in a Sherkat manufactory in Mashad. "Sherkat" is a guarantee for quality and beauty, a reliable pillar in the multifaceted world of rugs.
This rug has been treated with a "Sun Finish" wash. This wash includes not only the actual cleaning of the carpet but also its processing (ennobling) through the effect of being exposed to the sun which represents an increased value to the rug. Often after the production of a carpet the colors still seem "loud". Through this sun wash the colors become softer and sometimes get an antique look to it which of course depends on the duration of the exposure to the sun.
The special wool with which this Oriental rug has been made is called "Kork" wool. The Persian word "Kork" means "soft down". This expression is used for particularly fine and soft wool for very high quality rugs, especially for expensive rugs made in esteemed manufactures like e. g. in Kashan. It is common to add the word "Kork" to the provenance name as in e. g. "Kashan Kork".
